PALENKE Teen Arts Center @ 530 ELM AVE, SEASIDE

Welcome to the 2026-27 Academic Year at the Palenke Teen Arts Center, which is located at 530 Elm Ave, Seaside and open to Seaside and MPUSD teens and pre-teens ages 12-19 (and adults 18+ in special cases such as Come Back to Jazz). In order to attend classes, workshops or use the digital labs as a drop-in student, you will need to be registered.

Bienvenidos al año académico 2026-27 en el Palenke Teen Arts Center, ubicado en el 530 de Elm Ave, Seaside, abierto para jóvenes y preadolescentes de Seaside y MPUSD de entre 12 y 19 años (y adultos de 18 años en adelante en casos especiales como Come Back to Jazz). Para asistir a clases, talleres o usar los laboratorios digitales como estudiante sin cita previa, es necesario estar registrado.

Weekly Classes/CLASES SEMANALES: 

  • 1. Beginning Guitar ( Mondays 5:15PM - 6:15PM ) Alexis Múñoz

    • Students will be introduced to the guitar and have a general understanding of Music Theory basics and be able to demonstrate intermediate level sight reading. Have a general understanding of the following scales, as well as be able to demonstrate each scale on guitar in different keys; major, natural minor, pentatonic, chromatic. 

  • 2. Jazz Combos - Paul Contos

    • Saxophone ( Wednesdays 3:30PM - 4:00PM)

      • Introduction to the Saxophone for students looking to advance their skills in the world of jazz. These classes are quick practices with technique building.

    • Middle School Jazz ( Wednesdays 4:00PM - 5:00PM)

      • This class consists of teaching the basic levels of jazz technique and improvisation skills, elements of the musical “language” that encompass and involve all global cultures, with an emphasis on the Latin-Jazz model and Afro-Cuban tradition.

    • High School Jazz ( Wednesdays 5:00PM - 6:15PM)

      • This class consists of teaching the basics and intermediate levels of jazz technique and improvisation skills, elements of the musical “language” that encompass and involve all global cultures, with an emphasis on the Latin-Jazz model and Afro-Cuban tradition.

    • Beginning Trumpet ( Wednesdays 5:00PM - 6:15PM)

      • Introduction to the trumpet for students looking to advance their skills in the world of jazz. These classes are quick practices with technique building.

    • Come Back to Jazz ( Wednesdays 6:30PM - 8:00PM)

      • For those playing, or have played an instrument and wish to hone-in a bit on jazz and improvisation skills a bit more in a friendly, relaxed, non-academic surrounding

  • Our approach is to learn how to explore our creativity, learn new techniques, gain cultural perspective and have FUN!

Creative Labs

  • Leadership

    • Thursdays 4:30 PM - 5:30PM

    • Be a part of Palenke's event planning, create content, share ideas on future events, and join in on activities during meetings. 

  • Music Collective

    • Tuesdays from 4:30-6pm starting in October 2026

    • Open to students of ALL skill levels, whether you're a beginner or an advanced musician. We invite you to bring your instrument, but we will also have limited inventory available to borrow. Use this time to practice with your own band, create projects, or use it as a rehearsal space.

  • Podcasts

    • Available as a drop-in lab starting in October 2026

    • Learn, create, and record your own podcasts using our tech stations.

Workshops

  • Music Production

    • 5-week workshops - on Tuesdays from 4:30-6 pm - Sep 1-29, 2026

    • From learning how to mix, beat making, to audio editing, learn how to use a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) and create your own music.

  • Live Audio Production 

    • Offered in the Spring 2027

    • No Experience Required

    • Join our Live Audio Production workshops to learn how to keep a show running using different audio techniques and learning the basics! You will have the opportunity to shadow a sound technician while helping with sound at one of our Palenke events. Plus, you can receive volunteer hours for participating in this workshop and the event!

  • Film Production 

    • Offered in the Spring 2027

    • No Experience Required

    • Learn the skills to make a film, from script writing to production technical skills, like camera, lighting, sound, and editing. Students will be equipped with the skills to be able to film events, short films, etc.

  • Photography 

    • Offered in the Spring 2027

    • Learn how to capture images using digital and analog techniques and editing photos
