Chloe Canton Rice - PIANO SOUNDSCAPES FROM THE PHILIPPINES

Palenke Arts proudly presents virtuosa pianist Dr. Chloe Canton Rice in a program called Piano Soundscapes from the Philippines.

This program will feature a lush collection of piano works written by Filipino composers such as Abelardo, Molina, Tapales, Buencamino, and Kasilag.  This will be a wonderful opportunity for the general public of the Monterey Peninsula to learn about the rich and deep history, traditions and cultural heritage of the Philippines.

In this program, you will hear stories and tales of yesteryears, quotations of folk melodies, love songs like the kundiman, and ancient tunes such as the kulintang, as well as images of the Philippine countryside and even the “sonic depiction of a volcanic eruption.”

Chloe Canton Rice received her Doctor of Musical Arts at The Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. in 2014. She holds a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music degrees in piano performance from the College of Music, University of the Philippines (2001, 2004). Dr. Rice started taking piano lessons when she was three and a half years old.

At the age of five, she became a representative to the First Philippine National Suzuki Conference in Manila. In 1991, she was awarded the Salvador & Pilar Sala Foundation Scholarship, and gave her debut solo recital at the age of 15. Thereafter, she pursued piano studies at the University of the Philippines College of Music, where she was the recipient of the Carminda Regala Piano Scholarship. In April 1999, she was invited to the 13th Suzuki Method World Convention held in Matsumoto, Japan, She has participated in competitions, various workshops and master classes given by world-renowned artists in Europe, the US and Asia.

In July 2003, she was invited to perform in Brittany, France, for the benefit of the White Cross Foundation. As a Suzuki piano teacher trainee, she attended the 2nd Asian Suzuki Conference held in Taipei, Taiwan in 2004, and the 14th Suzuki World Convention held in Turin, Italy in 2006. She has collaborated with other artists and performed around the Washington D.C. area as well as at the Kennedy Center and at the National Museum of Women in the Arts where her interpretation of Leonard Bernstein’s Seven Anniversaries was praised by The Washington Post.

In February 2016, she won Third Place in the American Protégé International Competition and was invited to perform at Carnegie Hall, New York. Dr. Rice maintains her own teaching studio in Monterey, California.
